Machining Brass (UNS C36000), also known as Free-Cutting Brass, is the most widely used brass alloy for high-speed machining. It contains a controlled amount of lead that dramatically improves chip breaking, tool life, surface finish, and machining efficiency.

C36000 is regarded as the global machinability benchmark and is rated at 100% machinability, against which all other copper alloys are compared.
