Regular (87 Octane) Gasoline

Regular (87 Octane) Gasoline is a light, highly refined petroleum fuel formulated for spark-ignition internal combustion engines operating under normal compression ratios. It is the most widely consumed gasoline grade globally and is optimized for everyday passenger cars, two-wheelers, light commercial vehicles, and small engines that do not require higher octane fuels.

The 87 octane rating (measured as Anti-Knock Index, AKI = (RON + MON)/2) represents the fuel’s ability to resist engine knocking or pre-ignition under standard operating conditions. This balance ensures reliable engine performance, acceptable fuel economy, and controlled emissions without the need for premium-grade fuel.

Refining & Production Process

1. Crude Oil Distillation: Gasoline-range hydrocarbons are separated during fractional distillation (boiling range approx. 30–200°C).

2. Secondary Refining Processes: To achieve the required octane level and performance, gasoline blending components are produced through:

  • Catalytic Cracking: Converts heavy hydrocarbons into lighter gasoline fractions
  • Catalytic Reforming: Raises octane by converting paraffins into aromatics and isoparaffins
  • Isomerization: Enhances octane by rearranging molecular structures
  • Alkylation: Produces high-octane, clean-burning blending components

3. Blending Operations: Final gasoline formulation includes:

  • Reformate
  • Alkylate
  • Isomerate
  • Cracked gasoline streams
  • Optional ethanol blending (up to 10%) depending on regional fuel regulations

4. Quality Control Parameters: Each batch is tested and controlled for:

  • Octane rating
  • Vapor pressure
  • Sulfur content
  • Aromatic and olefin limits
  • Distillation curve
  • Density and flash point

Environmental & Regulatory Considerations

  • Designed to meet BS-VI / Euro-VI / EPA fuel standards
  • Low sulfur content to protect catalytic converters
  • Reduced evaporative and tailpipe emissions
  • Ethanol blending helps: Lower carbon monoxide emissions and reduce fossil fuel dependency
