Slack Wax

Slack Wax is a semi-refined petroleum wax obtained as a by-product during the solvent de-oiling process of lubricating oil base stocks in petroleum refineries. It is the primary intermediate raw material used for producing fully refined paraffin wax, semi-refined paraffin wax, and microcrystalline wax.

Slack wax consists of a mixture of solid paraffinic wax crystals and entrained mineral oil, giving it a soft, greasy, and plastic texture. Depending on refining severity and crude source, slack wax typically contains 5% to 35% oil, which directly influences its hardness, melting point, color, and industrial usability.

Chemical Composition & Structure

Predominantly long-chain paraffinic hydrocarbons (C20–C40+)
Entrained lubricating oil fractions
Minor amounts of: Iso-paraffins, Naphthenic hydrocarbons
No reactive functional groups (chemically inert)

This composition makes slack wax hydrophobic, chemically stable, and easily blendable with other waxes, oils, and polymers.

Key Characteristics

High Oil Content (5%–35%): Determines softness, penetration, and flexibility. Higher oil → softer, lower melting point; Lower oil → harder, higher wax yield after refining.

Soft, Plastic Texture: Semi-solid consistency, Easy to process and blend, Ideal for coating, impregnation, and lubrication uses.

Moderate Melting Range (45°C – 65°C): Allows low-energy melting, Suitable for industrial heating systems, Adjustable via blending and refining.

Good Oxidation & Chemical Stability: Resistant to oxidation under normal conditions, Stable during storage and transport, Non-corrosive and non-reactive.

Excellent Compatibility: Mixes well with: Paraffin wax, Microcrystalline wax, Polymers, Oils and additives. Enables formulation flexibility across industries.

Moisture & Water Resistance: Strong hydrophobic nature. Acts as a moisture barrier. Ideal for waterproofing and protective coatings.
